September ARRL SC Section report

Greetings South Carolina Amateur Radio Operators!

On October 12th I attended the Rock Hill hamfest (ARRL SC Section Convention) hosted by the York County Amateur Radio Society. Roanoke Director Dr. Jim Boehner, N2ZZ, was also present and hosted a forum with ARRL Updates. The hamfest was well attended and I enjoyed talking to many hams from SC and NC including a ham who was licensed in India but lives near Charlotte now. He has a growing interest in amateur radio, but he hasn’t actually gotten on the airwaves yet. Hopefully he received enough encouragement to get radio active!

On October 12th after the Rock Hill hamfest, I visited with the Blue Ridge Amateur Radio Society who set up communications using cross band repeat for the Trail Life USA Upstate “The Elements” competition. They also used an HF setup to demonstrate Amatuer Radio to all the youth camping out for the weekend. There were 185 young men and boys primarily from the upstate with some from the midlands. This was a great outreach program by Blue Ridge ARS. Thank you Blue Ridge ARS President Johnny Allison, WD4DYH, and the 6 hams who spent their Saturday supporting the event.

I was unable to visit, but on October 19th members of the Greenwood Amateur Radio Society setup a Amateur Radio booth at Lakelands iMagine STEAM Festival where 106 kids tried Morse Code and learned about ham radio! Thank you Dave N4WDC, George W3RXF, David KQ4JJE, Mitch KJ4JGP, Stephen KA4PQA, Kin KJ4BAK, Russ KN4TUI, Kevan N4XL, & Jack KN4SIK.

These club activites are great! However, a lot of the time I find out after the fact or never at all. These are events I would like to attend and support. I can also provide ARRL flyers, banners, and materials. Please contact me if you have any public events or support any event at W1MRC@ARRL.org

If you have any local stories of your club or Amateur Radio helping in the wake of Hurricane Helene please send a copy to our ARRL SC PIC Gordon Mooneyham at gmooneyhan@gmail.com so he can compile them. These will be prime examples which can be used to help support the bill to remove private land use restrictions that prohibit, restrict, or impair the ability of Amateur Radio operators from operating and installing reasonable antennas.

I know this month and next month are elections for many clubs. Please take a moment after the elections to check your club info on the ARRL website to make sure everything is accurate, especially your officers and point of contact for the club. https://www.arrl.org/find-a-club

Upcoming Events:

Roanoke Division Town Hall - was scheduled for October 3rd, however, due to Hurricane Helene affecting so many hams in SC & NC it has been postponed with a new date to be announced later.

Ballots to vote for South Carolina Section Manager were mailed out October 1st and must be returned by Friday, November 15th. The votes will be counted on Tuesday, November 19th. Please Vote!

Winter Field Day - January 25th & 26th - This is a great opportunity to get your club or local hams out in the field to operate in much cooler weather! Please register your site at or find more information at: https://winterfieldday.org/

South Carolina QSO Party - February 22nd - We are still four months away, but now is the time to start planning! Find more information at: https://scqso.com/
