May 2024 ARRL SC SECTION REPORT
SECTION MANAGER REPORT
May 15, 2024
John Gendron, NJ4Z
South Carolina Section Manager
Greetings to all our Palmetto Amateur Radio operators and ARRL Members. The Summer and ARRL Field Day are quickly approaching.
ARRL SC Section News:
Pleasant Knoll Middle School Students, AMSAT and YCARS complete an amazing contact with Astronaut Matthew Dominick, KC0TOR aboard the International Space Station on April 22, 2024.
On April 22, 2024, at 16:10UTC thirteen students from Pleasant Knoll Middle School completed a successful contact with astronaut Matthew Dominick aboard the International Space Station via amateur radio. The students from 7th and 8th grade interviewed the astronaut for about 10 minutes during the pass overhead. They asked a total of 23 questions while over 960 of their classmates, school facility, staff and district personnel watched. A team from AMSAT, Phil Shreves, N7GZT, Lee Ott WA2CNL and Tim Thompson W2SOC provided the equipment and helped complete the contact.
A team of volunteers from the York County Amateur Radio Society staffed demonstrations for the students that lasted the entire school day. The YCARS team set up a VHF/UHF go-box, dual band antenna and a HF go box with a HF antenna. The go-boxes were built by the club through a grant they received from the ARDC last fall. YCARS members Tom Mikkelsen, WA2POD (ARISS contact lead), Hillary Ramsey (club president) AB1CD, Scott Putnam, KG9V, Daniel Boyer (SEC) WD2DW, Theo Moore (club VP) K4TTM, Steve Anderson (club Secretary) NS4Z, and David Michaeli KQ4HWA demonstrated amateur radio to the students and teachers, with some making VHF and HF contacts. There was also a demonstration of CW operations and an informational display about satellite communications.
The event was livestreamed on 4 different YouTube channels and production of the stream was handled by SC section Technical Coordinator Brad Humphries, AE4VJ. In addition, the livestream, local media attended the event, with Charlotte legendary TV personality Larry Sprinkle (WCNC-NBC) attending the event a producing a story for broadcast. WCCB also attended and produced a news piece broadcast on the local Fox affiliate.
A replay of the event can be seen on the YCARS YouTube Channel link: https://www.youtube.com/@YorkCountyAmateurRadioSociety
SUMMER FIELD DAY FAST APPROACHING
The 2024 ARRL Summer Field Day will be held June 22-23. This is about 6 weeks away, time to get your plans solidified. An ARRL South Carolina Town Hall livestream will be held early in June to promote and discuss Field Day Activities.
As we all know, Field Day is the ultimate open house for Amateur Radio, with over 40,000 hams participating in all 50 states, territories and Canada it is easily the largest communications preparedness exercise for the year. It is an opportunity to showcase your club, amateur radio and your passion for it. It is an amazing chance to educate and attract people to our service and hobby.
Use social media, the traditional media and word of mouth to get the word out. Don’t forget to invite schools and scouting groups to your event. Also use the online Field Day Locator to input you site data so folks can find you (Link: https://www.arrl.org/field-day-locator ). The ARRL South Carolina Officials will be visiting sites across the state and we use the locator to set up our visits.
Additional rules and resources can be found on the ARRL website at https://www.arrl.org/field-day#rules
ARRL Field Day Merchandise can be found on the ARRL Store site: https://home.arrl.org/action/Shop/store
New SC Club dedicated to QRP Operations
QRP SC is a new club that has been formed to promote and expand QRP operations in SC. For those licensed operators interested in the art and science of radio communication using very low R.F. power, typically less than five watts, QRP SC may be the club for you. You can find more information on their website www.QRPSC.com.
Club leadership invites all licensed amateurs to visit the website, where you can learn, share and keep informed about everything QRP. They also extend an invitation to join them as a member, come to our occasional meetings, operating events and enjoy discounts on QRP kits and antennas. Members also receive a handsome Membership Certificate suitable for framing. There is no cost for membership in QRPSC.
CYCLE 25 Nears Solar Maximum and Provides Frustrations and Wonderment
As we near the solar maximum for cycle 25 between now and mid-2025, we will see more sunspots, solar flaring and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). During the last two weeks the sun has been really active, with several sunspot groups becoming very large and magnetically complex. Sunspot grouping AR3664 was especially troublesome for amateur radio operators releasing no less than 13 X-class solar flares creating HF radio blackouts on the sunlit side of the earth. Some of those radio blackouts were R3 level and lasted for hours. Those flares also produced 8 full halo CMEs that were earth directed. Those first CMEs impacted Earth’s magnetosphere creating a G5 level geomagnetic storm on Friday May 10th (Kp index 9+ and A indices in the 100+ range). This geomagnetic storm blacked out the HF spectrum with S9+ noise levels and high “D” layer absorption numbers. Aside from the radio blackout, the geomagnetic storm produced over 300 network outages, degraded cell service for AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, and increased normal power generation and voltage regulation issues by 28 times. The Storm also blacked out one of the largest GPS services used by automated farm and agriculture equipment.
All the ill effects aside, the storm provided an unbelievable display of the Aurora Borealis over the weekend of May 10-12th in 49 states, into Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. With this low latitude auroras and the ionospheric conditions UHF and VHF including 6-meter propagation were enhanced and 6-meter DX was amazing for some operators.
Sunspot group AR3664 turned off the western limb on Tuesday May 13th and fired a parting X8.9 solar flare. The eastern limb is now alive with new groupings of sunspots that survived the transit on the far side of the sun and they began to fire X-class flares early on the 15th UTC. Be solar weather aware and ready for rough HF conditions over the next week or so.
The ARRL provides weekly solar (K7RA Solar Update) and propagation (K7RA Propagation Forecast Bulletin) updates on the website and provides those to e-mail subscribers.
Club Visits and Presentations –
Any club in the state that would like a in person or virtual update on the SC section or Regional or National ARRL activities or a technical presentation to your membership, please let me know. I am available to make these visits or virtual calls. I will do my best to accommodate your schedules. Reach out to me at NJ4Z@ARRL.ORG.
ARRL SC Section Certificates of Merit and Commendation
Club leadership around the state please remember we have the ARRL certificates of Merit and Commendation available to honor members or amateurs that have gone above and beyond to help another amateur or in service to their community. There are specific certificates for Public Service, Emergency Communications, NTS, Local and Section Nets. This recognition of effort goes a long way in building confidence and self-esteem in operators. We love recognizing those how deserve to be recognized in our section. Please send any nominations for the certificate of merit for NJ4Z@ ARRL.org.
Section Announcements:
To all club and area PIO’s please remember to provide monthly reports of what your clubs or areas are doing to Gordon Mooneyham, W4EGM and to myself so we can highlight and share efforts of clubs around the state. This is very important as it motivational to other clubs and brings recognition to your club.
To SC Club Leadership across the state New ARRL members recruited by a club and send in the ARRL dues will generate a commission of $15 for the club. Renewals generate a
commission of $5 for the club. Information on the club commission
program can be found at http://www.arrl.org/affiliated-club-benefits
SC-ARES NEWS
As of May 12, 2024 Daniel Boyer, WD2DW has stepped out of the role of ARRL SC Section Emergency Coordinator. I want to thank Daniel for his tireless efforts in organizing, recruiting, and growing SC-ARES. Over the last couple of years Daniels efforts have reshaped our ARES organization, expanded our membership, and enhanced our capabilities. Daniel has a real passion for emergency communications and weather science. He served with distinction during his time as SEC and his impact will be missed.
I also want to introduce our new Section Emergency Coordinator, Robert Webster, WR8RW. Robert has served the SC section in roles as a county EC, DEC and finally as the Assistant Section Emergency Coordinator. Robert brings great insight, communications and organizational skills to this role. Robert developed and honed these skills with his many years of service to corporations and his service as a consultant. I am looking forward to working with him and seeing how he pushes ARES to the next level.
