February Section Report

Greetings to all the Palmetto State Amateur Radio operators and ARRL members. 2025 is already moving quickly. I’ve set a few radio goals for 2025, one goal is a do over from 2024. Last year I wanted to do at least 12 POTA activiations through the year, ideally one a month. I started great with 5 activations in the first 5 months of the year. However, I did not have another activation June through December so I ended the year with 5 activations. This year I activated the first week of the New Year for the New Year activator/hunter award and late February I operated the South Carolina QSO Party from a POTA entity. My plan this year is to try and invite other hams to join me on POTA outings as it is always more fun with a group. Another goal, which I shared in the November Section Report was for everyone to get on a local repeater at least once a week, my personal goal was to try almost daily. I have been seccesful so far, and if no one responds to my callsign on one repeater I will try 3 or 4 more repeaters to get someone to reply. I also want to get more active in contesting and so far this year I have participated in 5 State QSO Parties and the ARRL International DX contest. Check out the State QSO Party Challenge webpage for more information on the State QSO Parties and the challege.

The South Carolina QSO Party was Saturday, February 22nd. I activated Belfast Plantation with fellow club member Rodger, N4NRW. We operated from 1100 to 1400 and cleared 109 contacts. At 1400 the clouds hid the sun and the wind started to pick up quickly dropping the temperature, so we found it to be a great time to pack up. However, it was fun participating in the SCQP again, this is the 4th year in a row for me after not participing for a number of years. I finished the evening running the W4CAE Bonus Station on 40 Meters. I am looking forward to the results. A special thanks to the SCQP team Dave Edmonds, WN4AFP, Bill Chartier, N4IQ, Frank Baranek, KG4IGC, Jim Lathan, W4JLP, & Pete Emmel, K4LLE.

Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act Re-Introduced The Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act of 2025 (H.R. 1094 and S. 459) would require homeowner associations to accommodate the needs of FCC-licensed Amateur Radio operators by prohibiting the enforcement of private land use restrictions that ban, prevent, or require the approval of the installation or use of Amateur Radio station antennas. Homeowner associations have often prevented installation and use of such antennas through private land use restrictions. This has hindered voluntary training for emergency situations and blocked access to necessary communications when disaster strikes. Please contact your representatives to co-sponser this bill.

HL Hunley Special Event Station Saturday morning Feb 15th 2025 the Trident Amateur radio club headed out to Fort Moultrie US-9196 to set up and activate as N4HLH. The H L Hunley special event station. This special event is the commemoration of the first successful attack by a submarine during war. February 17th 1864 the CSS HL Hunley set out on its first and only mission and successfully sank the USS Housatonic in the Charleston harbor. Every year the Trident amateur radio club sets out to activate as the HL Hunley to keep the history alive. This year we had 9 activators and multiple helpers to get 182 contacts split between 20 and 40m. The activators were as follows AE4ZR David Merrits, WA4NMW Glenn Stephens, K4OPZ Steve Behr, VK6AAS Zach Aislabie, WB4ZBR Chip Mack, K4AGF Greg Fowler, KF5BLK Owen Trott, KO4MNB Jim Wasson, and KO4AFL Steve Anderjack, We also had three new licensed amateurs stop by the activation KR4BLM Randi Schilter, KR4BLL Isaac Schilter, and KR4BLK Caleb Schilter. Their calls were issued Saturday morning and the boys got on the radio and made a call to their grandfather in florida. He was able to hear them on an SDR but didn't have a 40m antenna available to make the QSO.

Hamfests, Swapmeets, & Tailgate Parties! The season is upon us, and I am looking forward to getting out and visiting with many new, old, and faimliar hams.
